Lake Anna Connections

by Irene Luck When people played video games such as Frogger, Pac-Man, and Asteroids in the 1980s, the only championships they likely won were the top scorer at the arcade or a tournament against friends and fam- ily from the systems they had in their homes. No one ever imagined that half a century later, video games would be as realistic and competi- tive as they are today, allowing play- ers to pit their skills against someone half a world away. Nor did people ever consider them a sport like foot- ball, baseball, tennis, or all the other traditional options offered by middle and high schools today. One of the participants in the pilot Esports program practices his gaming skills before a competition. LAKE ANNA CONNECTIONS | FALL |WINTER 2020 61
