The Benchmark Group, Inc. is a locally-owned company that provides surveying and engineering services to the Lake Anna area and surrounding counties. Their main office is located in Fredericksburg, and they have a satellite office in the Colonial Beach/Westmoreland area.

President and land surveyor Benjamin (Ben) C. Tatum opened the doors of The Benchmark Group in 2008, starting with a home office in Spotsylvania County. Ben has over 30 years of experience in the land surveying profession.

Some services The Benchmark Group, Inc. provides include surveys for closings with settlement agents in the area; site plans for new construction; property divisions; property line adjustments; staking property lines and corners for homeowners; and ALTA Surveys for commercial sites.

The survey process typically involves one of the field crews visiting the site, marking the property, and bringing information back to the office. Recently, the company invested in GPS and robotic-assisted field equipment technology. This new, state-of-the art technology has been implemented in recent years. Once the information collected is brought back to the office, the office team reviews the field data and produces a final product. Our staff then works directly with the homeowner and/or builder to ensure the end result is correct.

The company has continued to grow over the years, and the scope of services continues to grow as well. The Benchmark Group has evolved from a one-man operation to a current staff of eight, which includes three field crew teams and four office personnel.

In 2024, the company was able to add a second licensed land surveyor, Casey Schooler, to its staff. Schooler worked for The Benchmark Group during the summer months while attending Randolph-Macon College. After graduating in 2016, he joined the company full-time and is now a partner in the firm.

The Benchmark Group looks forward to continuing to provide Lake Anna area residents with professional surveying and engineering services.
